The United Kingdom and the United States have announced a key commercial pact that will guarantee no import taxes on UK pharmaceutical products entering the US market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to raise expenditure on medicines through the NHS. This pledge secures that import taxes on these crucial goods will be held at zero for a duration of three years.

This agreement follows previous threats to hike duties on patented drug imports, with potential rates floated reaching 100%.

"This deal with the United Kingdom reinforces the global environment for innovative medicines and establishes long-overdue balance to transatlantic drug exports," an announcement noted.

Trade Impact

Medicines represent one of the UK's biggest goods shipped to the America, which is clearly the largest destination for large UK drugmakers.

Statistics show that in the year to the end of the third quarter, the UK sold drugs worth billions to the US. This amount made up nearly one-fifth of British export trade in that span.

"This deal safeguards jobs, increases investment and sets the stage for the UK to become a worldwide center for medical research," a government official remarked.

Key British Pledges

The agreement entails several key changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it deems new therapies to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to increase overall health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be capped at 15%. Previously, rebates exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal takes place against a protracted row between the sector and the ministers over spending levels and regulatory access.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that American customers were charged significantly more for the same drugs than patients in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been announced toward US facilities.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS must invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
