Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
