EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
